The Body Achieves What the Mind Believes

Having ambitions in life and setting goals are indications that you are one step ahead. Everyone who has a direction in life, have goals in mind. As the Management Study Guide rightly indicates that when people have some goals in their lives, they are more productive. But big or small, they cannot be achieved until you have a plan to reach them. All you need to remember is that the body achieves what the mind believes. It all begins within. No doubt, motivation, and self-confidence are the best tools to win this war in your mind, but these are not the only tools you need. This article will talk about the practical steps which would take you there.

1

Set Practical Goals

Set Practical Goals

Setting goals is the first and foremost step and the most important one indeed. As you go through the process of setting goals for yourself, keep in mind the STEP formula that can have a great impact on your mind:

  • Specific: For instance, instead of promising yourself that you would lose lots of weight, state clearly how many pounds you would lose specifically
  • Time-bound: Setting a deadline is important. It would let you stay focused, and you won’t get distracted when you know the deadline is approaching
  • Executable: You can't reach a goal until it’s broken down into smaller actionable steps. There need to be steps within this bigger STEP formula. It is my personal experience that whenever I tried to achieve bigger things on a whole, the rate of success was lower. By breaking down that bigger picture in mind into smaller fragments and working hard for every piece, you can make it much easier for yourself
  • Practicable: It’s great to be ambitious as ambitions are the fuel for life and a sign of being alive. However, there needs to be a difference between being ambitious and impractical.

Selecting The Right Moment

Selecting the Right Moment

A research paper by Professor Katherine Milkman shows how important it is to strike at the right moment if you want to achieve some goals in life. In his paper, “The Fresh Start Effect,” he refers that there are some days in your life which feel like a fresh start. You feel more motivated in your mind on certain days than any other routine day. It feels like a beginning of a new week, a new year or a new day after holidays, etc. These are perfect for setting new goals and putting behind your imperfections. So, selecting the right time is as important as setting the goal itself. Make sure you fully exploit the wave of motivation you get in your mind on certain days.

Write It Down

Write it Down

If you wish to achieve your goal, you must write it down as it’s the first step towards making it physical and tangible. To stay more focused, it would be a very good idea to write down your goal on a sticky note and paste it on your study desk or your cupboard or refrigerator. The purpose is to make sure you get to see it daily and stay motivated. In the process, you are training your brain constantly. As a result, your body will work to achieve it.

4

Design A Schedule

Design a Schedule

One of the most common mistakes I’ve seen people make is to set a deadline and design a schedule to reach there. Again, it’s all about focusing on the smaller steps to achieve the bigger goals. You must have in front of you, a complete action plan divided into a step for every coming day. For instance, you can’t just get away with deciding that you would save this much money by the end of the month. Make sure you have written down more or less how much would you put in the money box on a daily basis.

Believe me, you have the capability of doing much better, the only thing that limits ability is your lack of planning. So, don’t let yourself down by doing it only technically wrong. The importance of devising a practical schedule is evident from the fact that Indiana Department of Education suggests spending most of your time designing a master plan. This step has the same importance as that of a roadmap when you want to reach a destination.

Make It Measurable

Make it Measurable

Make sure that the small steps you’ve devised for yourself do have a measurable outcome. If you cannot measure your performance, you would not come to know how you’re doing. It just translates to a lack of direction, and you don’t know where you’re heading. So, set some tangible goals that you would achieve with every step. It will help you stay focused.

Pat Yourself On The Back

Pat yourself on the Back

Before that big celebration, make sure you have a reason to celebrate along the way. As you achieve small goals within that bigger goal, don’t forget to treat yourself. Celebrate every step, to make it a joyful journey. It would help you not get exhausted on the way. Motivation is the key to achieving success, so never forget to pat yourself on the back and let yourself know how well you are doing. With these celebrations would finally come that bigger one that you’re waiting for in first place. So don’t be too harsh on yourself.

Moreover, do share your small achievements with your loved ones. A word of encouragement from a loved one can re-energize you, and it can impact the way you perform ahead. No wonder, Forbes suggests getting in touch with at least three people whose words will light you up whenever you start feeling low on motivation. This technique can help you stay on track and improve your performance. Try it!

In Conclusion

Stephen R. Covey has rightly said that “motivation is the fire from within, if someone else attempts to light that fire under you, chances are, it will burn very briefly.” When you try to win over yourself, achieve something you yearn for, the best person that can help you is yourself. If you think you can achieve something, you will, no matter what the whole world thinks. If unsure that you can make it, no matter how positive the environment you just can't do it. Community Counselling Services also acknowledges the importance of self-confidence and self-esteem and refers to it as a driving force for achieving personal goals. So, keep it up!

Don’t forget about us the day you celebrate that big success. We wish you a happy journey towards achieving your goals.
