Each belt is made for a different type of lifting situation, and I’ve gone through enough of them to give you some tips. Weightlifting belts can get pricy, especially when you haven’t figured out which ones are going to work for you, so I’ve created a list of some of the best belts I’ve found for different types of lifts.

Before we get started, I also wanted to address the fact that many people still choose not to wear a weightlifting belt when doing serious heavy lifting.

Weightlifting belts work to increase intra-abdominal pressure, allowing you to better support your spine during your lifts. It doesn’t support your back directly. Instead, it helps you engage your core muscles more as you lift, so you’re protecting your spine and getting a stronger core at the same time. But when you start lifting truly heavy weight, when you are expending a great deal of effort on compound movements, that’s when you should buckle up. You’ll be preventing injuries and increasing your own performance.

If you haven’t used a belt before or you aren’t working with a trainer, you’ll want to watch some good videos on exactly how tight to wear your belt and how you should be breathing while you’re wearing it. It’s important to remember that the belt doesn’t do any of the work for you, it’s just there to help you do the work better and more safely, so use it like the tool that it is.

Even the best weightlifting belt won’t improve your strength if it’s the wrong size or worn incorrectly.

  • Thick, stiff belts that are the same width all around are best for big, compound muscle motions.
  • If you’re squatting heavy and doing deadlifts, a hard, wide belt is what you want. This is the ideal choice because it supports your abdominal muscles and helps you to increase intra-abdominal pressure. This way, you’re supporting your spine more strongly from the inside out, and you can improve your posture to avoid injuries. This belt is designed to be a bit restrictive, so it’s great for those single-motion moves.
  • In contrast, if you’re working on training moves that require more motion, like cleans and jerks, you want a softer belt that will allow you greater range of motion. These exercises require more dynamic motion of your core, which would be too restrictive in a harder style belt like above. The softer belt allows you to keep your core tight through the fluid motion that you need.

Your best weightlifting belt choice is a belt that’s pretty snug. You should feel pressure when wearing it, so it’ll definitely be tighter than the belt you wear on your pants.

Don’t wear it so tight that it’s cutting into your stomach, though. It’s meant to support the work you’re doing, not do the work for you, and definitely not make your lifting more difficult. If it hurts, it’s either too tight, or the wrong belt.

On the note of it being a wrong belt, some people have shorter waists. It’s just how some people are built. Some shorter men and women have less space between their bottom ribs and the tops of their hips, so check the fit before you purchase. Belts that are a little more narrow will work for you.

Your belt will go just above your waist, so you have about an inch, possibly two, between the bottom of the belt and your hips. Try to keep the waistband of your pants out from under it though, that can cause irritation and distraction as you lift.
